More About Alcombe Methodist Church
We are a warm and friendly congregation from ages 6 to 92 years, with average attendance of around 35-40 each Sunday, we also have a space for our young people to learn in a fun an interesting way, as well as joining in for some of our main service. The building is now 92 years old – the same age as our oldest member, but it is very modern inside having had the worship space and kitchen fully modernised. The kitchen has two ovens and two fridges plus freezer, industrial dishwasher and large range of cupboards and equipment. The worship space has an electric organ and electronic screen and projector as well as amplified CD player and sound system. The chairs are moveable so that the worship area can be changed from a traditional service space, with seats facing forwards, to a more informal circular arrangement or any other set-up depending on the service and worship requests of the preacher that week.
There is also a large hall at the back which is regularly used and a smaller lounge area, which is where our youth worship is held.
The building is used by many community groups for things like children’s parties and family celebrations; drama and dance rehearsals for groups linked to the Regal Theatre; Minehead Male Voice Choir rehearsals and residential groups, as it has shower facilities.
We also did what we felt was our duty to the local community during Covid-19 Lockdown and used our premises as a space where vaccines could be both stored and administered. We still use our hall for seasonal Covid-19 and flu inoculations.
The local Ukrainian community also meet here of a monthly community meal with their host families, it is the base for Minehead Street and School Pastors and we run our own Friendship Centre and Bright Hour on Wednesdays. We also opened our doors during the colder months as part of the government’s ‘Warm Spaces’ initiative. We found it to be so successful that we decided to continue to run it all year round and it is now called ‘Warm Welcome’ runs every Tuesday. We are actively involved with Christians Together in Minehead events.
We run monthly drama, singing and art workshops and series of Transforming Conversations about faith and life experiences and annually host the Exmoor Youth Project Holiday Club for children aged 5 to 12 years.
We are a family who offer support and love to each and to our many guests and it is our individual congregation’s mission to seek to offer God’s love through hospitality and warm welcome.
